Today's Working Lunch
I was interviewed about the car by Simon Gompertz of the BBC's Working Lunch program. The interview should appear on today's program - 12:30 on BBC2.

Follow our antics as we run our Mercedes 190d (and now 300td) on straight and waste vegetable oil across Europe to demonstrate the use of vegetable oil as a carbon neutral fuel for cars. Of course new oil is far from carbon neutral but in their daily lives they are run off filtered waste oil, we don't even use pumps its gravity fed only. Unfortunately the laws across europe mean using waste oil is not always possible. See our other blog in the links section for details of the laws.

Just saw you at BBC, good job! It has been over 2 years now that I have not had any cars, but it is great to see people with cunning ways around the petrol exploitation. Keep up the good work. Cass
I've just seen you. Nice use of the decals on the car - it meant I was able to come straight to your website.
Simple, effective marketing!
Now to read your blog...

Saw your interview Steven, and it has given us food for thought. Were now looking at converting both our cars to bio fuel. Happy motoring.
Hi Stephe
I saw and recorded your interview. Very interesting. Would you be able to describe the used oil filterung process in more detail please?
Alex
Hi Alex,
Most of the filtering process and equipment was shown on Working Lunch. The only bit that wasn't clearly shown was a T-piece with two taps just before the filter unit. I open one
tap to remove water and another to start the filtering stage. I used taps that are meant for washing machine fittings - available from DIY shops.
The three stages are:
1) Straining to remove the big bits
2) Settling and separating, to remove the water
3) Filtering to about 5 microns
If you miss out step 1, you will find your filtering equipment gets
clogged up.
If you miss out step 2, you will have water in your fuel which may cause your fuel pump to rust and stop working.
If you miss out step 3, the fuel filter in your car will get clogged up, or worse.
The bottles I use are 10 Litre KTC vegetable oil bottles, but you might find a sturdier container works better.
Most of the other parts are available from a DIY shop, apart from the filter unit itself, which came from a supplier we found on the Internet.
I hope that helps. At some point, I plan to post more information about this to the main blog, as a lot of people seem to be interested in it.
Steven.
