I'd been having some starting problems recently, which I traced to the starter solenoid.
I replaced the starter motor (and solenoid) and that's solved it. It turns over much faster and catches immediately.
Winter starting can be a bit tricky when using vegetable oil as a fuel, because it is quite thick and needs a good strong pressure to pump it through, especially when the weather is cold.
In winter I put an additive called Coldflow 350 into the fuel, to prevent it freezing or waxing. I've just started putting it the tank again for this year, in case we have a cold snap.

a friend of mine up north uses 2 heating pads attached to the gas tank with some Velcro, it has, so far worked.. its only on the nights that it get below 20F that he has a problem. last time i talked to him he was going to look for a hotter pad that is made to keep motors warm (they uses them in northern Canada and other vary cold areas)

We took the approach of just heating the small amount of fuel in the filter in order to get it started. Unused fuel is passed back to the tank warmed which should raise the temperature that way, once its started. Although we don't often see extreme cold here.
